Back in November, I was contacted by editor Mary Forsell of Romantic Country magazine. They wanted to highlight my blog in the feature called "The Blog Spot". I was so surprised (to say the least) and was happy to forward the images requested. I expected maybe a little line or two under my blog banner.
Wow, was I ever surprised when I received the Spring 2012 issue. It is the nicest thing ever! If feel that somehow Mary Forsell has visited my workroom or one of my shows or has spent some time visiting with me over a cup of coffee. It was just the thing that I needed to recharge my batteries and help me get started on items for the upcoming 3 Friends Show mid-March. Many, many thanks Mary !

If you haven't had the opportunity to pick up an issue, do so soon. This is the sweetest, most inspirational magazine to hit the newsstands in a long time. I can sit and get lost in all the dreamy pictures. It's a great little escape during a busy day. Pick one up and see for yourself! M.

Where Women REALLY Work

I love to have a pretty, well-organized workroom.

I feel like I can breathe and be inspired to make wonderful things.

My bits and pieces are nearby ...

at my fingertips sort through to find that one little item

that makes the difference between ordinary

and unique.

There is plenty of bare table space to spread out

and let the creative juices flow.

Plenty of space for files: ideas, catalogues,

lists, receipts, etc.

Lots of drawers to store ribbons, lace, ink pads,

stamps, punches ... all sorts of goodies.

Sometimes there is even a little spot for things

that make me smile just to be able to

look at them whenever I want.

IN MY DREAMS !!! This is the real story.

It all starts out very innocently. A little paper here,

a little glitter there. Feathers, lace, ribbon & paper,

paper, paper! Without any warning ...

the little pixies and brownies come to play.

They create utter havoc - everywhere!

Overnight a seemingly organized workroom becomes

an absolute mess. I wonder how it really happened

and how I lost control?!?

Okay, so there aren't really any pixies and brownies.

It's just me (and sometimes Elf Patty). Time is short and

you just keep making one thing - then another - and another.

Pulling things from everywhere. Unearthing things you don't

remember from under some stack. You find that the bare

expanse of table top has vanished and you are working on

a square foot of space. All your trinkets and treasures are in

piles around you where you dropped, flung or stacked them.

Then, the urgency to create a whole new collection of things

is over and you walk in to find the huge ... ugly ... unbelievable mess

and wonder how in the world did it happen???

So you take a deep breath and just start putting things away - vowing

the whole time to never, ever, ever let this happen again.

I AM a neat, organized person.

It just doesn't make sense! Finally after several hours of

reorganizing, dusting, vacuuming, and positive affirmations ...

the world is back on its axis and order has been restored ...

Counting My Blessings

While I was putting finishing touches around

the house this morning, I was thinking

about how blessed I am.

My husband is fabulous and feeling

healthier all the time, my son just returned

home safely from a two-week road

trip and will be joining us today.

I have the best friends and family, a job,

health and it doesn't get much better than that.

Christmas 2009

I think it's important to take a moment over

this Christmas weekend and reflect on just

how many things we have to be thankful for.

With that said, I had the opportunity to visit with a certain jolly old elf. He asked what I wanted for Christmas and I said I had everything that I need. He seemed to think that I didn't have a picture of me on his lap ... sooo ... now I have one!

Ho, Ho, Ho! So, take time to enjoy the holiday

Little White Church Obsession

Quite by accident, I seem to have collected
a few little white churches!

This might be influenced by the memory of the
white church that always adorned
my Aunt Sissy's mantle each holiday season.

I was fascinated by it.

The cellophane stained glass windows, snowy roof and the steeple.

You could almost hear voices singing Christmas carols from inside!

This little one was a gift from my cousin Beth.
It reminds me of the Christmas

that she spent with us here in Oregon.
Very special.

This one I made almost 10 years ago.

One of my first attempts to create a vintage-look.

My sis made this one for me. It was her first attempt.

I keep it out year 'round.

This year I received 2 new ones for my collection.

Elf Patty heard me say how much I loved

these little churches and surprised me.

The one above for my birthday and

this one for Christmas! This one is very special as it

belonged to her Grandma Pepper. I think we all would like

to have a Grandma Pepper like Elf Patty did. To think that

she would give me such a keepsake is such an honor. I treasure it.

Not only is the church so sweet - it still has the original box

with price sticker ... $1.99 at S. S. Kresge Co. - perfect ! M.

Gifting: Yummy Stuff !

Whether it is Christmastime or otherwise, sometimes you feel the need to let people know that they have been special in some way. Over the past few months, there have been several people that have made an unpleasant time much more tolerable. My hubby and I felt we wanted to let them know that we noticed and it made a difference.

The bottom line ... they cared and we wanted to reciprocate. For me, cooking equates with caring. So, last week I got busy and baked lots of fun, yummy stuff to give. I had fun!

I pulled out recipes for my favorite holiday treats and included a new one that I had been wanting to try.

The results are pictured below.

I think that packaging and presentation are as important as what is inside the package.

As they say, you eat with your eyes first.

There were snowflake pizzelles dusted with powdered sugar ...

chocolate dipped marshmallow pops and

coconut thumbprint cookies with cranberry curd centers ...

cranberry-orange nut bread, savory parmesan crackers and

sweet, salty pecans! I hope the recipients enjoyed sampling
everything as much as I enjoyed creating it.

The savory crackers and thumbprint cookies were recipes from Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa. Both fabulous!!! The sweet and salty pecans are a holiday favorite. I have served them at the Holiday Treasures show for the past two years. They disappear in a matter of minutes. I thought I would share the receipe. If you have any questions about the recipe or any of the other items shown above - just email !

Sweet and Salty Nuts

Butter (about 2 tbsp. to grease baking pan).

1 pound pecan or walnut pieces (4 1/2 cups)

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/3 cup light-colored corn syrup

Coarse sea salt or kosher salt (about 1 tbsp. or 2 tsp. salt)

Freshly ground black pepper (about 1/2 tsp.)

Coarse raw sugar

Preheat over to 325 degrees. Using about 2 tablespoons of butter, generously butter a 15x10x1-inch baking pan; set aside.

In a large bowl stir together the nuts, granulated sugar, corn syrup, salt, and pepper until well combined; spread in prepared pan.

Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden and bubbly, stiring once or twice. Remove from oven. Sprinkle generously with raw sugar; toss to coat. Transfer mixture to a large piece of foil. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. Break apart to serve.

Store nuts in airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or in freezer container in freezer up to 3 months. Makes 20-24, 1/4-cup servings.

A Big Holiday Thank You!

Our Holiday Treasures Show was such fun this weekend. It was great to see old friends and get acquainted with new! Diane and I would like to thank you all for coming to her sweet, little barn in the Sublimity countryside. Your support means more than you know.

I know its too dark, but those waiting to come it were warmed by a inviting fire. It combined with the twinkley lights really got you in the holiday mood. Diane and her husband, Matt, really outdid themselves to make the setting special.

Frosty's Friend

Each year I make a new type of snow man. This year, I decided I wasn't going to invest in expensive foam balls as my base. Instead I experimented with wads of newspaper. I think the result was even better than before!

This year's snow man reflects my love of old & recycled items: newspapers pulled from the recycle bin, an old rusty funnel "hat", a belt salvaged from on old pair of roller skates, neck scarf from an warm woolen blanket. He is perched on an old book of Christmas stories. He is just one big repurposed hunk of snow man!

He and a few of his best friends will be at the Holiday Treasures Show this weekend hosted my Diane (Molly Mo's) and me. Show details are on the left. Hope you can make it! M.

Frosty's New Hat

and have come to identify his

iconic black top hat with him.

Of course, being so famous,

even Frosty needs a new look

Good Luck Mushrooms

as good luck symbols.

They are displayed in honor of the people's reverence

for nature and hopes for good luck in the coming year.

On to the Next Season

A Season of Change. It has been an unusual Fall - to say the least. I have had to learn to adjust and accept the way I usually go about things. Something I don't do easily. I'm not inflexible. I CAN accept the things that cause the change and go forward. However, it does require some serious reorganization of what is in my brain. So with that ... My husband has had some health issues that have required some changes. Nothing awful - just change on his part and, for me, adapting to how that affects me and this little business that I love. However, I love him more - so you take care of what is most important and realize that everything else is just not such a big deal. What is precious is apparent really fast.

Not to worry! He is much better! I, however, am adapting to a different plan for the next season of creations and shows. Again, it takes me a bit to wrap my tiny, little brain around this stuff -- but I AM doing it. If I hadn't said anything, no one would be the wiser, but I feel it. I am a planner and organizer. Changes of "The Plan" put me in a spin. The good part of this is that I am being forced to work smarter and more efficiently. No time for creative indulgences that can take precious time.

Since this post has been all about change - there has been a big change in my workroom. A change from black glitter to mica flake and silver sparkles - everywhere! There was a little "snow" storm in the workroom this weekend. Even a little bling - and - we all love bling!

Last year Elf Patty ordered the publication, Holiday with Matthew Mead. A beautiful collection of eye candy for the holidays. One picture in particular caught my eye - two blingy, blue trees created by Debbie Dusenberry of http://www.curioussofa.com/. This year I decided to had to make a few of these. What fun and I think they turned out lovely.

These cuties and many other creations will be waiting for you at ...

Presto-Chango

It only makes sense that if it takes a week to set up for a show -- it takes a week to undo it. It indeed took a week. What have I learned from this experience? I have to find a different venue for my next Vintage Halloween Bootique. We knew after last year's event that we might be able to have it in our home one more year, but after that -- probably somewhere else. We were right. It has gotten too big, too much stuff to relocate and too much stuff to display! And ... above everything else ... too much disruption in our everyday lives. My husband is such a sweetie and just goes with the flow. He even admitted that it is time to "move the Bootique"! So the search is on for a new venue.

Here are some pictures of the Bootique just before we opened our doors on Friday evening. It was a smashing success and certainly made the blood, sweat and tears worthwhile!

Yes, it was. I would like to thank everyone who attended. It was fun, crazy busy and rewarding to see the little "Bootique" image in my head come to life.

I would also like to thank all my wonderful friends that helped in one way or another: Ellen (my sis), Rosa, Sarah, Diane, Carly, Betty, and of course, Elf Patty. Without these women and my husband, it wouldn't have been possible. I owe you all BIG! I would also like to thank my nephew, Matt and great-nephew, Hayden for providing the muscle to move all the furniture. (Tip: you can get lots done by bribing with warm brownies!)

This year's Bootique is a 2-day event. I have added an Early Moonlight Shopping opportunity this year. On Friday, September 30th, from 5-8 p.m., you can shop early while you enjoy tempting appetizers and wine or coffee. Admission is $5.00. The next day, Saturday, October 1st, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., you can shop to your heart's content for free. There will be cider and seasonal, sugary treats to keep you happy and hyper!

She is dressed in a vintage lace camisole, a black feather boa, black & white polka dot bloomers, a black tulle petticoat and button-up boots. Her long black hair is in a fashionable "Gibson Girl" up-do with a "witchy" facinator perched fashionably to one side of her head.

All she needs now is an appropriate name to reflect her enchanting personality! Just leave your suggestion (Keep it clean - this is a family blog.) as a comment on this post by September 7th. On September 8th, I will announce her name to you. The person with the winning submission will receive a little Halloween gift hot out of my workroom. Don't Faint ... I'm Still Here !

I know, I know... it's been almost two months since my last post. Just haven't had anything exciting to report, share or promote. I'm gearing up for Summer sales. Been out shopping and collecting new, interesting things for you. Some of these things need a little love, but I can see the beauty under the flaws.

I did make this little "birthday cake" for a special little gal's 13th birthday. All the little embellishments represent things that are special and unique to her. If you would like to order one of these for a special someone, just email and we can discuss the details!

Elf Patty, Diane (Mollly Mo's) and I have been planning for the 2011 Vintage Halloween Bootique. We have begun making whimsical Halloween creations certain to get you into the spirit! We will be adding an Early Moonlight Buying evening with "small bites" and "spirits of the vine". Stay tuned for more information on this. It's sure to be one killer bash!

Mysterious Surprise

This week is Spring Break here in Oregon. My husband and I just returned from a few days in the Bend area. What a wonderful retreat into the mountains! Nothing to do but read, keep the fireplace going, and watch the occasional flurry of snowflakes.

Now, we are back home, doing chores and catching up. HOWEVER ... when we got home I discovered a mysterious surprise hanging on my front door! A shopping bag with an assortment of treasures - "vintage trifles" to be exact!

Who is the mystery giver? Who knows exactly what I love to collect? Who was nice enough to put together such a wonderful assortment of treasures - especially in crunchy cello bags tied with coordinating ribbons? Why the enclosure in the little red envelope? And the special bandaids - I'm always in need of a bandaid since I am such a klutz! Sometimes I have two different "boo-boos" at a time.

Whoever this generous person is - THANK YOU ! I don't know what inspired you to go to so much trouble, but you know what makes my heart sing.

These are the lovely shamrock cookies that Elf Patty baked for the sale last Saturday.

Not only were they beautiful, they were Yummy! Not a one was left for later.

We had a wonderful day and enjoyed meeting so many new people.

Thank you to everyone for making our sale such a success! I think next time I will encourage everyone to take a couch and enjoy their coffee and treats. It was more like a gathering of friends, than a sale. Very special people. I feel lucky (I guess that's okay - I am Irish!)

The Annual 3 Friends Sale is just a little over a week away.

I've been making all sorts of things! I will also have many new,

little, old, goodies that are hard to pass up.

I seem to be drawn to a group of "Floosies" this spring.

They just keep popping up here and there.

"Girls just want to have fun" and THEY ARE FUN!

This little kitchen stool was such a surprise.

It no longer resembles the way I found it - thank Goodness!

After giving it a good bath and scrubbing - I found it was pink!!!

I dressed it up a little with old linens and lace -- and

I don't mind saying -- I think it turned out pretty stinkin' cute!

Studio Play Date Fun

Saturday morning, five ladies, all from different backgrounds, gathered at my house for a day of creativity, learning and fun. It was my first Studio Play Date: A "Passport" to the Past.

The tables were full of necessary supplies, there was plenty of hot coffee and morning treats in the kitchen ...

There was so much energy and creativity going on that caffiene wasn't necessary!

There was paper flying, glue sticking, ink inking, and eyelets galore! Did I mention great conversation?

Everyone had something to share, especially about their "passport" theme. The stories were wonderful and kept us all entertained and laughing throughout the afternoon. The results are below.

This was a tribute to Grandmother Daisy Olive - yes, Daisy Olive! What a beautiful, sweet name.

This "passport" captured memories of a honeymoon to Italy.

A lovely tribute to parents and childhood memories. The back (not shown) honored three generations.

This "passport's" theme was flowers, gardening and spring. It contained wonderful, vintage pictures of young women anticipating their commencement posed with very lavish floral displays.

This was a loving tribute depicting a special man's journey from childhood to becoming a loving spouse. There is even a gift of a golden ticket to the future and all the adventures to come. Perfect!

It was incredible to see the transformations take place. In the morning there were five, blank manila file folders ... by mid-afternoon ... there were five very individualized "passports" ...

all created by five beautiful and talented women. I felt so lucky to have the opportunity to spend the day creating with them. We shared, laughed and created a fun memory while preserving older ones.

Snow Ice Cream

All winter I have been intending on posting an old recipe for Snow Ice Cream that I found in my mother's recipes. Each time the country got hit with a storm this winter, I meant to post it. Each time I waited too long and all the new fresh snow was old icky snow.

I think I have it right this time! When I grew up in Kansas, we usually got a doozy of a storm each winter. On the occasion that we would have a "snow day", my mom would entertain me by making "Snow Ice Cream"! We would bundle up and take a large pan outside to a pristine snowdrift. We would fill that pan with fresh snow and come back inside to add the ice cream ingredients. The recipe below uses eggs, but I don't remember adding any eggs. I think we just used sugar, whole milk, and vanilla.

The combination of ingredients didn't really matter. It was just great fun making this stuff and having a summertime treat in the dead of winter!

I thought that since most of the country has been hit with the biggest winter storm - maybe ever - this was the perfect time to share this recipe! Here goes. Have fun. Keep warm and safe. Oh .....

the picture above was taken yesterday at my oldest, bestest friend's farm in southeast Kansas. By late afternoon, they had over 20 inches and the wind was blowing like crazy!

Snow Ice Cream

2 eggs

3/4 cup sugar

1 Cup evaporated milk

1 tsp. vanilla

Beat eggs, add milk, sugar and vanilla.

Then go out and gather a pan of freshly fallen snow

and quickly combine with mixture until consistency of ice cream is achieved.

Note: We didn't use eggs and used whole milk instead of evaporated milk.

Using a variety of techniques, you will transform an ordinary folder into a lovely keepsake “passport” that will feature a special person, significant event, memorable trip or something from your imagination!

Registration fee of $120. includes all supplies you need except a few personal photos or mementos * (see below examples) Your play date also includes lunch, beverages, morning and mid-afternoon snacks and other fun goodies!

Payment must be received prior to the workshop and may be made using PayPal, check/money order, or cash. Registration is non-refundable, but can be transferred to a friend if for some reason you are unable to attend.

A Little Whimsy

A great thing about entertaining early in the holiday season is that you are finished with decorating and can enjoy your efforts. Our get-together this past weekend was delightful. Just the right amount and mix of guests. Not because we planned it that way, but it just happened. It was fun to observe who was in an in depth discussion with who. Also, to hear a burst of laughter from the other room and wonder what spurred all the hilarity! It was wonderful time with some of our favorite people.

I wanted to share something I saw on an recent episode on the Food Network. Nigella Lawson prepared gingerbread for a holiday party and decorated the stacked squares with a little forest scene covered with powdered sugar. I thought it looked like a fun thing to do. Instead of gingerbread, I made cake-like brownies. Our local cake-cookie decorating store had the exact little trees and deer to make the scene. I piled the brownie squares on a cake pedestal, added the trees and deer -- and this is the fun part -- sifted a dusting of powdered sugar over the top! Voila - instant holiday fun! Here is the result...

Sorry it is a little blurry, I was hurrying to get a shot before guests arrived. It and the poinsettia blossoms above are a couple of my favorite holiday things this year. The blossom stems were damaged and wilting. I snipped them off and placed them in old bottles filled with water -- something I had seen in one of the holiday magazine issues. The blossoms were saved and can be enjoyed for a long time. Easy and instant holiday eye candy!

So, I guess the moral of this post is ... you don't have to go to a lot of work to create a little fun and whimsy during the holidays. Keep it simple and enjoy the time with friends and family. M.

Tis the Season

It only seems fitting that on the first day of December I will be making my first batch of Christmas cookies. We will be hosting a holiday get-together this weekend, so we spent last weekend "decking the halls". And, deck it we did - even a sprig or two in the "loo"!

I spent some time cleaning-up my workroom. What a mess it was. Now it's a much more contained mess. I am looking forward to working on a few projects (gifts) this weekend. I know that my hubby will be watching the Civil War game between U of O and Oregon State, so I will have some quality time at my work table.

I always look forward to being able to work leisurely on a project for someone special. Actually, that is how I got started in this creative business. People would see something that I had made for a friend or family member and ask if they could commission me to make something for them. And, so it went. Ten years later, here I am making lots of somethings for many of you. It still makes my heart happy to see some one's eyes light up when they hold one of my creations. That makes all the work worthwhile.

For some time now I have been discussing conducting a day-long workshop or two after the first of the year. I am devising a project that will be universally interesting to a mixed group. I will pair this day of creativity with delicious food and lots of fun. SO, stay tuned for more information. It's coming soon! M. We woke up to a nice covering of snow this morning! Much earlier than usual for the Willamette Valley, but it's here just the same. I know it has played havoc with the morning commute, but it has helped get me into the holiday mood. I know that sounds odd since I just completed a few holiday shows. However, once the shows are over (usually before Thanksgiving) I have to decorate our home. Sometimes it is hard to be up for it after decorating and taking down, then a couple times more at various venues. Soooo, a little dusting is just the thing to get me in the spirit of things.

Several of you asked for the glazed meatball recipe that we served at the Holiday Treasures Show. It is super easy and only three ingredients.

So here it is: Cran-Chili Meatballs!

2 - 12 oz jars of chili sauce

2-3 cans of whole cranberry sauce - depends on how saucey you want them

1 bag frozen meatballs, We used the ones from COSTCO that have about 140 per bag.

Put chili sauce and cranberry sauce in a pot and heat until all is melted. Stir often. Add frozen meatballs; heat until meatballs are thawed and then simmer for 3 hours. We moved them to a crockpot to keep them warm. You could use a chafing dish.

What a wonderful time we had ... our 5th Annual Holiday Treasures Show was ...

the best ever! I don't think we could have fit another person in the door -

well, yes, we would have - if necessary I would have waited outside!

It was so nice to see familiar faces and get acquainted with new ones.

There was a very festive mood in the air and the spirit of the season was all about.

More than once someone commented that they need a push to get

them into the holiday mood and this little barn did the trick!

A few weeks ago I was invited to place some of my Halloween collection in a delightful and interesting little store in the Pearl District in NW Portland - Thea's Interiors on NW Glisan. It is an eclectic mix of antiques, vintage finds and a variety of unique, original pieces. Wonderful! Not only wonderful - it's BOOtiful! (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

A couple weeks ago, my husband and I met our friends Betty and Steve for lunch. Before lunch, we visited Thea's to see this special place for ourselves. We weren't disappointed.

Perfect Antiquing Day in Coburg!

Yesterday was the Coburg Antique Faire, in Coburg, Oregon. Once again, it was a huge success! The weather was absolutely perfect and there was a huge crowd. A girl can't ask for much more than that -- except for a great guy to lend some muscle .. maybe lots of muscle. I didn't get a picture, but my honey was so much help. I couldn't have done the show without him. I know he is dog-tired today and has a long week ahead of him. His continued support is amazing.

Anyway, it was great to see so many returning customers and visit a bit. I met new people and had a great time. I took a few pictures at the "crack of dawn", literally, so they seem a bit dim. Regardless, you can get an idea of my space. We came home with a much lighter load. I only have two tables left -- ones that I didn't want to sell since I use them to display. So, when you can see out the back window of the Durango going home, you know you had a good sale.

My Vintage Halloween BOOOtique is less than a month away and I am trying not to panic. So many things to be made and times a tickin'! In order to make things, I need things. Time to Give Thanks to All

Whenever I participate in a show, I feel like it is a reunion of sorts. I get to visit and get reacquainted with some of the nicest people. Some times I see them in other settings, but most of the time at one antique- related event or another. I got so many hugs and well-wishes!

So it's time to thank everyone that made it possible for me to continue doing these shows. I have come to the conclusion and realization that I can't do this alone.

So - lots of love and thanks to my husband, Mark. I can't begin to list all the things he does so I can pursue this passion I seem to have for the sweet, old things I drag home. Thankful that he still wants me to drag my old-self home, especially after I fill the garage more than the half I designated for my stuff. His half is always getting invaded.

Elf Patty. Elf Patty cracks the whip and makes sure I keep cranking out the stuff for you all. There are days that I am ready to quit. Those are the days when I'm tired, stiff, sore, sleep-deprived and did I say tired? She keeps me laughing, motivated and helps me keep the creative juices flowing. A person couldn't have a better elf. We love ya Patty. I also had the help of a couple of other elves: Betty and Valerie. Big hugs to you two - too!

Diane and Matt Kaser. This couple has managed to create a wonderful venue for all of us junkers to sell our wares and for all you collectors to shop 'til you drop! Their countryside home is the perfect setting for antiquing. They make it a breeze for vendors to set up, they host a Friday night potluck and barbeque and have made the day of the sale much easier for our customers. Parking, food & beverages, music, and restrooms were all top notch.

Last, but not least, all of my friends/customers that came see me. Your support keeps me creating.

Your kind words fill my heart and make it sing. Thank you.

Treasures in the Countryside!

Sunday evening we were invited to the Kaser's for a real, old-fashioned, country supper. Under the old trees, in the yard, we thoroughly enjoyed the best dinner prepared by Diane's mom and Diane's husband, Matt. The evening concluded with her mom's homemade apple cobbler, made with apples from their own trees. The only thing that made all of this better, was enjoying it while watching a fabulous summer sunset. Sorry, I didn't get any pictures. You will just have to take my word for it. It was a flashback to my childhood -- what a treat! I tear-up just thinking about it.

Anyway, while we were there, I got a peek at all of Diane's treasures! If her goodies are anything like what all the other vendors (16 - yes, 16 vendors!) will be bringing on Saturday to her Flea Market --- then come prepared to be dazzled by all the wonderful merchandise and bring a big truck to haul it all home! I'm not kidding. Each year Molly Mo's Antique Flea Market just gets better and better! DO WHATEVER it takes to come out on Saturday to this special, special event! I can't use enough exclamation points !!!! Click the link for details.

Molly Mo's Sneak Peek!

This is a quick sneak peek of a few new items - hot out of my workroom!

This is a petite-sized mannequin that I fell in love with. Her sweetheart neckline is embellished with a vintage pearls and bugle beads.

My images aren't very good, so you will just have to come to Molly Mo's Antique Faire next Saturday and see her for yourself. Here are a couple more new items ....

This is a crusty, rusty what-cha-ma-call-it that I added all sorts of vintage odds and ends to! Again, it was hard to photograph and it isn't quite finished yet, but I wanted to share it with you anyway. You gotta see it in person to appreciate its uniqueness.

A garland fit for a "Queen"! Each tag is hung with an old garter belt supporter. How many of you remember those days?!? Thank goodness for pantyhose!

This is just a sample. I've been busy finding unique items to tempt you, as well as making new creations!

Where Has the Time Gone?

It seems like it was just the first of June !!! Is it really time for "back to school" shopping? If so, that means my hubby's summer break is almost over! Maybe there will be time for one more quick escape before he is up to his ears in alligators again. ANYWAY ...

I want to thank everyone for their understanding comments about my sweet Zoe. I wonder when I will stop wondering what she's doing or listen for her tippy-tap claws in the hall. I still catch myself thinking that I need to get home to take care of her. I know that all of this just means that we really loved her and she will hold a special place in our hearts forever. Again, thank you all. It helped to read your comments.

So onward! I know I haven't posted anything, much less pictures of projects. Elf Patty and I have been working on Halloween whimsies for my Vintage Halloween Bootique on October 2nd.

OH - MY - GOSH !!!

My workroom and garage are about to burst at the seams with Halloween - and I'm not exaggerating. I bought a fabulous chair and table this weekend to take to Molly Mo's Summer Antique Faire.

I was so excited until I got home and realized I didn't have a anywhere to store them. After a few hours of re-organizing the garage, they are in, safe and sound. Before that, Diane and I did our own little version of "American Pickers" and went on a spree in a sweet gal's shed. Now that was FUN! Lots of wonderful, rusty-crusty stuff.

SO, even though you haven't heard much from me this summer, I have been collecting treasures, making new things and keeping myself busy - like that's ever a problem! Keep checking back and I will begin posting pictures of new merchandise to tempt and tease you.

AND - hope to see you this Saturday, July 31st, at the Barn House Vintage Home and Garden Flea Market in Battleground, WA. A Funky Junk Weekend!

What an amazing weekend and experience! The Funky Junk Sister's Vintage Flea Market was so much fun. I didn't realize how busy I was until I looked at my pictures. I missed getting so many images to share with you. I wanted to document the whole weekend in pictures, but was just too busy and I missed capturing so many things and great people!

I guess I will just start. We left home at 4:30 a.m. and arrived in Puyallup at 8 a.m. Just in time to start setting up. It went so smooth, cuz I had the help of my son, Jake, (now known as the "Junk Hunk"). We finished and were able to go to our hotel and freshen up before the special workshop with Sue Whitney at 5 p.m. Everything after that is a blur. I have never been a vendor where there have been so many wonderful shoppers! The night went by very fast. Unfortunately, we were absolutely exhausted and skipped the Rodeo Dance.
It sounded like a good time was had by all.

Saturday morning we arrived, fortified ourselves with coffee and were ready for the day.
I met wonderful vendors from the area and many, many great shoppers!
Everyone was so nice. I wish I could have visited more with everyone.

This little cutie modeled my pet bed for me. A perfect fit!

Again, I didn't get as many pictures of people. This is Diane's space (Molly Mo's). It was so lovely and fresh - very Diane! I loved that bright punch of color from the parasols.

Linda and Dixie were absolutely the sweetest and so much fun.

The Goldilocks Dilemma

Just like Goldilocks, Miss Zoe is trying to decide which bed would be juussst right!

Unfortunately, neither of these little cuties will be "just right" for her. She is about 70 pounds too much dog, but they could be perfect for some of her smaller friends.

A few weeks ago, I bought the Summer 2010 copy of Flea Market Style.

Just a few pages inside was this:

I just happened to have an old bench that a friend had given me. It worked perfect!

After adding "feet" and finials, it makes one of the sweetest 4-poster beds
for an extra special pooch!
Of course, I couldn't make just one. Elf Patty had found some
great old legs and we felt brave enough to make one from
"scratch". Well, it was a learning experience and we used
every power tool in my arsenal - but we did it! And no one got hurt
in the process. Major accomplishment!

I love making these little beds and will have more at my next show!
In the mean time, Miss Zoe will have to settle for a bed that is a little

and so little time! Funky Junk Sister Antique Flea Market is this weekend!!!

It seemed so far off and all of the sudden it's almost here!!!

Of course I've been busy making new things. Don't want to get in a rut - right?

I'm sure you are wondering what the heck these things are. Well, of course there is a story...

A few years ago, a bride left a hanger with a cardboard bodice shape on it in the dressing room where I work. I thought what a great way to hang a special garment! I waited several weeks to see if anyone would call to retrieve it. Never happened, so, if you know me very well you would know that I had the wheels turning from the moment I saw it!

The shape was made from lightweight cardboard and must have come from a dry cleaners.

I needed something to display a vintage prom dress and this worked perfectly!

Again, if you know me very well, I just couldn't leave it as I found it. I had to make it look special. I covered it with old newpaper to give it my look.

I displayed it at a show and it was a hot item of interest. Everyone wanted to buy it. I finally caved and let it go thinking that I could get another shape at any dry cleaners that cleaned special gowns. Well, I was so disappointed when I wasn't able to find replacements. That was the end of that. Move on and get over it.

I didn't get over it. Last week, I knew I would need something to display some vintage pieces I'm taking to Funky Junk Sisters and that silly, paper-covered, bodice-on-a-wire-hanger seemed like the perfect thing. I went to work and created a pattern working from my own mannequin. And voila! I love them. Even added some mother of pearl buttons as a fastener on the back.

I love it when an idea comes together. More new things soon!

Wishes ...

It seems we all have wishes of one kind or another. We wish for serious, meaningful stuff, as well as whimsical, silly stuff. Sometimes our wishes come true and sometimes they don't. Either way, wishes are important things that keep us motivated and hopeful. I think that most of the time we make our own wishes come true by directing our thoughts and energy toward a certain goal. Sometimes knowingly and sometimes not.

But, just imagine that there was a Wish Fairy ...

A Special Day with Sally Jean!

I have always been enamored with the exquisite pieces created by Sally Jean Alexander. I have always wanted to take a class from her, but know that I don't need to add something else to my plate. I have enough trouble keeping focused and don't need something new and shiney to distract me! Well, Elf Patty has been wanting try her creative hand at making some charms. On a whim, she sat down and signed up for Sally Jean's necklace class!!! We were both so excited and I was so tickled that Elf Patty was going to fulfill a dream!

Almost as good as getting to go myself.

Patty had a fabulous day and created the beauty below. Her necklace features her mom at various ages. What a sweet tribute!

So, Elf Patty, you did good and we all will expect more wonderful treasures in the future!

Without much fanfare, my son and his oldest, bestest friend recently launched a photography business - J Nichols Photography. These two have been buds since first grade - through thick and thin. I can't imagine them not being successful once they put their minds to something. One is a little more "business minded" (a good thing) but both are extremely talented and creative.
I wanted to show my support by posting about their new venture and hope that some of you out there will check out the link to their Facebook site on my sidebar. They offer a wide variety of portraits, wedding and event photography and artsy stuff.

A Favorite of Mine

One of the visitors at my recent sale suggested that I submit my calendar project to Somerset Life. Since it is difficult to mail, I asked my son (photographer extraordinaire) what the best way/settings, etc. were to submit photographs of it instead of mailing the real thing. We found all the submission requirements in an old issue and then he went to work using my little camera.

I hadn't begun taking apart my little "shop" in the front room, so he designed a vignette using the calendar as part of a writing desk.

The result was so wonderful and sweet. So "me" that I didn't want to dismantle it. It made me want to sit and tend to all the crummy tasks that I avoid at my real desk in my workroom! Why not keep it and enjoy it you ask?!? It just doesn't really work for me in everyday life. I would have to purchase a laptop, sacrifice a variety of the props that I use for shows, find a better place for my file cabinets that currently are the base for my real desk.

But, for a couple of hours, I really enjoyed what I might use in the future. The pictures turned out well. I need to send them to him to edit before I submit them with my calendar story.

I know that this isn't an event of significant importance, but I wanted to share this special little vignette with you. I just shows what you can do with what you have tucked away in other rooms or your storage. If you use things that you like, it will all come together in a comfortable, pleasing way! So look around your house, garage, even the patio and create a new spot just for you! M.

I'm Gonna Do It !

After much hemming and hawing, pondering, procrastinating, and a little being scared-to-pieces to commit, I am going to be a vendor at the Funky Junk Sister's Vintage Flea Market in May!

All of this dragging of feet and contemplation has nothing to do with the event itself. It's just that I've never done a show that far from home and my hubby cannot not attend. He will be in the middle of a district tennis tournament. So I was hesitant to do the show by myself.

After the 4 Friends Sale, I had a family discussion with my husband and son. Should I try to do the show or shouldn't I?!? Diane and her husband Matt said they would help me, but that didn't seem fair - especially to Matt who would have to lift and carry everything. So my son said - "Do it." He offered to take a vacation day and come along to provide the muscle!!! WOO HOO!!! So we are set to go! I am so excited!

Now, I'm busy making new stuff and can't wait! I'll keep you updated with new pictures to lure you to Puyallup mid-May. Hope to see you there! M.

A big, big "thank you" to everyone who came to our 4 Friends Sale on Saturday!

Once again, you made it a wonderful day. I was, once again, amazed at the number of people who stopped by my little "shop". Many new faces as well as many familiar ones. Elf Patty's delicious shamrock sugar cookies were a hit and I shared my recipe for the coconut nests more than once during the day. My lovely niece Ashlie was a huge help tending the cashier's stand and wrapping up every one's purchases. I didn't realize that I missed getting a picture of her until today. Maybe again next year, Ashlie?!? If it wasn't for Elf Patty and Ashlie, I would have never been able to pull this off. It's such a godsend to have your very own elf and I am thankful for my Elf Patty!

And, miraculously, Miss Zoe decided to be the welcoming committee. This is a dog who usually scares the wits out of everyone with her big bark. She has intimidated many a UPS driver to just giving a soft knock on the door, leaving the package and running for their truck. Not Saturday, she quietly greeted everyone and waited to get a pat on the head. One happy dog. When she wasn't meeting and greeting, she was asleep right in the middle of it all. And that is one big heap of dog in the middle of things. No one seemed to mind and she reveled in the attention. Go figure. Today, she was back to her cranky, normal self. Gotta love her.

Anyway, after a lazy morning, I started turning my little shop ...

back into our dining room!

Six hours later, everything is back in place and my garage/warehouse is reorganized. Now I just have to make some sense of my workroom. IT IS A MESS ! So, tomorrow I will tackle it. If you don't have anything better to do, drop by. I'll put you to work mucking it out. You see, I have to have a clean slate before I can begin making things for my next event. That leads to another thing to ponder ... what will be my next event? I'll keep you posted. M.

Hey, we live in the Pacific Northwest. What's a little liquid sunshine? All sales are in where it is warm and dry - and - who knows? Maybe we will get the real sunshine to make it a perfect shopping day?!? It can happen!

Once again, my dining room has been transformed into "The Shop". I haven't displaced my husband and Miss Zoe too much. Mark is still trying to find his writing desk-- but, Zoe seems to like it. She is having a big snooze out there right now!

I have lots of little "trifles" for you ...

oh my gosh ... lots of eggs - lots and lots of eggs - all kinds. Real, blown quail and araucana, porcelain, wood, paper mache. Did I mention that there are eggs? Lots and lots of eggs - what was I thinkin'?!?

Of course, I can't have a sale without inviting the "babies"!

A few years ago I met Mary of the Farmhand Feed & Home Company in Cottage Grove. She has become one of my regular customers and shares my love of whimsical Halloween.

Mary just emailed to say that she has created a blog and these are just a few pictures of her shop. It looks amazing !!! I plan to take a field trip and visit her one day very soon! A few weeks ago, I wanted to check in with my friend Coleen of Coleen's Reflections

to let her know I have been keeping her in my thoughts.

Quite accidently, I entered her "Love is..." Giveaway! I realized as I was leaving

a comment that it was her giveaway post, so I ended my comment with, "Love is Comforting".

Lo and behold, Coleen drew my name and I became the lucky

recipient of this sweet little creation! I have a Coleen original!

Elf Patty has Coleen's outstanding handmade fairies,

my sister has Coleen's fairies - and

now - I have something made lovingly by Coleen!

This soft, velvet heart brings the message of "Cherish Your Family". Then, when you lift up the

little fairy, it says "Forever". I didn't notice until this morning that the back of the fairy says "Heart Hugs" . Little surprises everywhere! I love it!

St. Valentine's Day

When we were in elementary school, it was always such fun to make Valentines for all our classmates. There was always a really pretty one for your best friend (Sharon) and one for your teacher (Mrs. Uphaus). Even one for that boy that you thought was kinda cute (don't remember who that was). That was the one your really pondered over. Nothing too obvious, but you wanted it to be just right - whatever that was in grade school!

We also made Valentine boxes that sat on our desks ready to receive all the Valentines. There were contests with prizes for the prettiest, the funniest and the most original. It was a day of fun and excitement with a party at the end of the day. One year the "room mothers" made strawberry sodas and strawberry cupcakes. We slowly poured more and more soda into the glasses to see how high we could get the pink foam before it oozed over the side! Such a simple but memorable treat! Another year, a group of moms made cinnamon candy discs that were really hot. Another wonderful, homemade treat. Now I look back and we really had special celebrations with a lot of thought and care put into them. We were so lucky.

Today, my husband and I are celebrating with friends. A special little dinner here at home.

Something savory, something bubbly and -- of course -- something chocolate!

New Projects

After much dragging of my feet and procrastination, I finally began working on projects for our 4 Friends Sale mid-March! It's not that I don't enjoy it, I just needed some time off. Well, that's all over now and I'm busy, busy, busy! The house is a mess to prove it!

As some of you know, it is a constant process coming up with something different and fresh. I think that can be more exhausting and draining than the actual making process.

Then, there are those ideas that are just that -- ideas -- that don't exactly come together. Those are the frustrating ones that you spend a lot of time on because you know it would be really cool if you could get it to work. Sometimes you just have to say "uncle" and move on. You guys never see those attempts and never will if I have anything to do with it!!!

Aanny-way, even though some items have been made for years and years, I hope I came up with a version that says "ME". When you see it, you will know it had to be made by me.

As Elf Patty would say, "it's Martherized". Not my most favorite term, but I know it implies something positive and you get the idea.

So, I have been playing with fabric and placing my collage designs on it. It takes a little "doing" and does have limitations, but I have been liking the end result! I hope you will agree.

I know that my 200th post is looming on the horizon and I will celebrate with a GIVEAWAY!!! So stay tuned, because I hope to entice and dazzle you into entering the drawing with something HOT off the workroom table.

Okay, so this is off the subject. I just want to let all of you in the snow-ridden parts of the country know that I have been thinking of you. I hope that you and your families are okay with all of the snow. My cousin in Maryland is stuck at home with no power. Fortunately, I think she is staying with friends until her husband returns from a business trip and they can "dig out". Schools are closed so she doesn't have to try to get to work. I guess the saying "it's not done until it's overdone" applies. My hope is that it will be "overdone" soon and you will see those beautiful cherry trees blossoming in no time. Take good care, M.

"Guest Room" Blue

So, last summer I promised to show pictures of my newly painted guest room. Annnd, things got busy ... lots of house guests ... lots of shows ... lots of work. Anyway, I forgot. Over the weekend, one of my blogging buddies ask me for the name of the color.

It isn't really called "Guest Room Blue".

It's Martha Stewart, Sea Spray Blue, #MS261!

I'm sorry that the pictures don't really give you a good idea of the color, but it really is that wonderful shade of light, robin's egg blue. Not too turquoise, not too baby-boy blue - - just like Goldilocks' bed - just right! Unfortunately, I didn't find it on the first try. This was, I think, my third try. So, I have lots of little tester colors for projects! The good part was that I didn't do any glazing. I liked it "as is".

I know this is post is about 6 months late, but maybe it's just in time for spring home improvement projects.

New Artist Class to begin soon!

Mary Green of Green Paper will be present the next Artist Class beginning February 1.

I will be participating again and have submitted a tutorial to make the
little mannequin shown above. I made it using basic supplies
that you can find at craft supply stores.

However, if you are feeling creative, you can branch out and use
many, many different items to make your mannequin unique!

I am always keeping my eyes open for old vanity lamp bases,

little baubles that to embellish the mannequin, old laces, buttons, etc.

A Little Visual Pick-Me-Up

I was going through my 2009 pictures and found this one taken in our back yard. Obviously, it was taken last spring when the yard wasn't a mushy, mucky mess. It was just what I've been needing. Bright, cheerful inspiration - a reminder that this gray, dreary, wet season will pass. And -- I did see some grape hyacinths peeking up out of the leaf mulch the other day. So, there is hope. ( I know, I should shut-up 'cuz we don't have 2 feet of snow. However, I don't mind snow - it's bright.)

I shouldn't be surprised, but I've been in my annual "What am I going to do for Spring?"
mood. Which ties into my "How am I going to proceed with my little business this year?" dilemma. All of this makes for lots of mulling over: what worked, what worked but was way too hard on the old bod (not a Spring Chicken anymore), what sounds like fun and how should I proceed with it?

So, I'm going to throw it out there for you to give me your "2 cents worth". I've been toying with offering some one-day workshops in my home. A fun day filled with creativity and a yummy lunch. This sounds like fun! A room full of creative women making something wonderful and food. What could be better?
I've had many of my customers ask if I would consider doing this. It sounds like a good thing to try. Now, I'm brainstorming on projects that could be easily adapted into a one-day class with supplies that are readily available. This could take a little time but I am thinking that April or May might be a good time to give this a whirl. Let me hear from you and I will keep you posted.

During the month of February, I will be participating in the next Artist Class session. This is a group of wonderful tutorials offered by artists across the country at a very reasonable price. Saturday, October 2, I will be hosting a Halloween Booo-tique at my house. I LOVE to make Halloween so I will be creating lots and lots of whimsical, unexpected things to adorn your haunted house. As I was writing this, two, new ideas popped into my head. EEK! I will be confirming the date very soon. More details to come!

Into the Wild Blue Yonder...

and after stressing out about airline issues, we were finally off to the Midwest!

The sunrise was beautiful, as was the mountain range below us.

It was a whirlwind of fun, hugs, old and new sights. We had a great time with friends and family. The weather held long enough for us to visit my oldest, dearest friend in southeast Kansas. It was great to see her husband and son again. The time with them was lovely. They spoiled us and made us feel so at home.

This is Jake. He guards their farm and is one big furry love bug. He loved all the cold and snow - go figure!

We we returned to KC and my cousins Beth and Leslie took me to some of their favorite haunts.

Our first stop was Penzey's Spices. A shop filled with all sorts of smells. I brought home a few bags of herbs and spices to experiment with.

We lunched at the Kansas City Culinery School. It was the best. The stuff

in those little cups was Asian ice cream with cinnamon-sugar crispy

wontons. Perfect!

Then we found Curious Sofa. Yes, I had to buy a few things.

Wish I could have gotten this chest in my carry-on.

We even found the Victoria Trading Company.
Couldn't leave there without a few trinkets.

Of course there was Jake's in the Village - where "Life is Good".

So, here we are with our buddy "Jake" modeling several winter hats.

Very attractive - right?!?

It was the best day with two of my very favorite people.

I took more pictures, of course, but I wanted to share this one day with you.

There are some days that you will always remember and some people that no matter how long it has been since you were last together - you just pick up like it was yesterday.

That's the way with these two and with my friend Sharon.

Now, I just have to keep talking and get them all out to Oregon. No more waiting 10 years between visits. Lets see... we can go to the coast, to Central Oregon and of course

there is Mount Hood and .......... M.

We just returned from a late afternoon visit to the Country Club Plaza.

We stayed and watched the full moon rise. How beautiful!
